Jeep XJ Cherokee 4.0L water pump replacement

In this HD video streaming how-to rental at  Vimeo On Demand, Moses Ludel removes and installs a water pump on a 1987-2001 Jeep XJ Cherokee 4.0L engine.  The basic steps in this water pump replacement carry over to other 4.0L Jeep inline sixes, including the 1991-95 YJ Wranglers and the 1997-2006 Jeep TJ Wranglers.  Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ/WJ models also use this engine from 1992-2004. (Many steps apply to Jeep CJ models equipped with the 232 and 4.2L/258 cubic inch inline six cylinder engines.)  Included is how-to on removal and installation of the serpentine drive belt.  Click here for direct access to details on the streaming video rental at Vimeo On Demand.  If you would like to view the trailer at the magazine site, click here.

Jeep XJ Cherokee radiator removal from the engine bay

The additional new how-to HD video covers radiator R&R on a Jeep XJ Cherokee. Make the water pump removal easier by removing the radiator first. Once out, consider subletting the radiator to a local radiator shop for flushing or rodding and pressure testing. The trailer can be viewed at the magazine or for direct access to the Vimeo On Demand streaming feature, click here!

Honda XR650R  Dual-Sport Get Ready: Nelson-Rigg Luggage plus TCI Products Racks and Skid Plate Crankcase and Side Cover Protection!

TCI Products Sequoia tail and saddle bag rack for the Honda XR650R motorcycle   Video gear on board for field filming off-road

The magazine's Honda XR650R dual-sport motorcycle carries valuable video equipment and camping gear into the backcountry. For rugged, well-crafted luggage, durable racks and substantial engine protection that will hold up to dirt and off-road motorsports environments, we turned to TCI Products and Nelson-Rigg luggage. Nelson-Rigg luggage offers utility, high quality materials and versatility. TCI Products provides the best engineering and fit in racks, skid plates and engine guards. In this video series, see how Nelson-Rigg motorcycle luggage and TCI Products racks and engine protection work for us!

Mounting and Testing Michelin Dual-Sport T63 and Cross AC10 Motorcycle Tires

The magazine's Honda XR650R ready for video filming on the road and trail! Michelin T63 and Cross AC10 tires for DOT dual-sport use

At left, 4WD Mechanix Magazine's Honda XR650R motorcycle is ready to roll with fresh Michelin T63 tires and matching tubes! This motorcycle follows the "100 miles from nowhere rule!": Used for video filming at remote desert and mountain venues, tires must be reliable, trail and road worthy—and durable.

In this two-part HD video series, we mount and test Michelin's T63 and Cross AC10 dual-sport motorcycle tires. These tires and matching tubes are DOT approved for use on public roads and highways. The T63 is a 50/50 highway and off-pavement design. The Cross AC10 has a rugged enduro-type tread design for 90% off-pavement use. Our testbed for these tires is the magazine's popular Honda XR650R dual-sport motorcycle with DOT on-highway needs plus remote backcountry use. The bike serves as a platform for filming HD video in the field, doubling as a technical how-to subject...In Part 2 of the HD video, see these Michelin tires put to the test with the high power-to-weight ratio XR650R torque!

Note: At the heart of our Honda XR650R dual-sport bike is a freshly built, uncorked engine. With Hot Cams 'Stage 1' camshaft and L.A. Sleeve head and cylinder work, this powerplant pumps out an estimated 55 horsepower and 50 lbs. ft. torque. At approximately 300 pounds wet weight (without rider, racks, bags or outdoor gear), the dual-sport converted motorcycle requires secure rim bead locks and premium, dependable tires!

Cylinder barrel removal during upper engine rebuild

In this instructional HD video series, Moses Ludel rebuilds the top end of the magazine's Honda XR650R motorcycle engine. Low compression led to the tear down. (See the HD video how-to on the cylinder leak down test.) The tear down led to a sublet of the cylinder head and cylinder for machining and reconditioning at L.A. Sleeve Company. For an overview of the teardown and removal of the cylinder head and cylinder barrel for inspection, click here!

The rebuild of the Honda XR650R upper engine is now available as a 54-minute HD video step-by-step upper engine how-to rebuild!  Rent the entire program, including the bonus segments on valve adjustment and tuning, at Vimeo On Demand.*

*For those doing only a valve adjustment on this four-stroke engine (and other four-strokes with conventional rocker adjusters), a valve adjustment standalone video is also available at Vimeo On Demand.  Each video rents for a 30-day period, allowing enough time for parts delays, machining sublets and other time constraints or challenges!

Setting piston to TDC for cylinder leak down test  In addition to the new mobile website, the magazine has launched "The Off-Road Motorcycle Channel"  with engine diagnostics, troubleshooting and rebuilding how-to videos. Moses Ludel discusses cylinder leak down tests, valuable for motorcycles as well as automotive/truck engines.  After pinpointing the low engine compression source on the magazine's Honda XR650R motorcycle, the follow-up is a complete top-engine rebuild with machine work from L.A. Sleeve Company!

Cylinder barrel removal during upper engine rebuild   Moses Ludel rebuilds the top end of the magazine's Honda XR650R motorcycle engine in an in depth HD video how-to.  Low compression led to this tear down. (See the magazine's HD video coverage of the cylinder leak down test.) This tear down led to subletting the cylinder head and cylinder for machining, head work and cylinder reconditioning.  The project became a 54:06-minute streaming HD video instructional rental at Vimeo On Demand!

"I am in Burundi, a great place to have an on-off road oriented machine, 2- or 4-wheeled. I just subscribed to the how-to video for the XR650R top-end rebuild at Vimeo...It’s absolutely fantastic and exactly what I needed! I have a 2002 that has pretty much the same problems after 20k kilometres (no chance for a leak-down test, but it’s about 75 psi dry compression – bumps to over 100 wet). Your video will be a great help for the repair!"—David E.

L.A. Sleeve cylinder liner and rebuilt head assembly The  magazine's Honda XR650R motorcycle came with very low hours on the bike. Unfortunately, the air filter had been sealing badly, and the result was an engine with damaged valves and excessively low compression. We turned to L.A. Sleeve Company for its Moly 2000 iron/chrome-moly alloy cylinder sleeve and cylinder head rebuilding. In this HD video, see what it takes to build an ultra reliable cylinder head and barrel at L.A. Sleeve Company. This bike will be used extensively as an HD video filming platform, and our aim is maximum dependability in remote backcountry and on the highway.

"In response to your reply, Moses, I'm mind blown...It will take me a couple reads to soak this all in, but once again, mind blown. I wish you were my neighbor!"—Member Megatron
"I first read Moses' writings when I bought his Jeep Owner's Bible years ago. I joined the forums to solicit advice on my cylinder #1 misfire. My mechanic advised replacing the motor due to the 250k mileage. Moses started with fundamentals, rather than part swaps. And other folks here have chimed in with additional advice. The misfire topic is getting a lot of views, so I assume there's a bunch of other TJ owners whose Jeep 4x4s are aging and need some attention. I agree with Biggman100, joining these forums and posting a question is going to get you help and educate the rest of us."—JJ_Jeep, Forum Member Since June 8, 2013

"The new garage section is terrific! I have a lot more things to upload on the modification tabs plus a few more of my vehicles to add as well. I like the fact I can post my own review on modifications and let others know the pros and cons...This was a great idea, so thanks to whomever thought that up. I think people like a review by an end user over the review of a distributor...Some reviews I have read seem a little too good to be true!...Member Megatron
