The 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers
Race took place on February 10th. A week prior to the event, the crowd started gathering at Johnson Valley
Recreational Area near Barstow and Victorville, California.
By race day, makeshift "Hammertown" grew
to over 20,000 spectators, hosted 136 Ultra4 competitors and their garage tents, offered several rows of vendor
booths and attracted an international contingent of media. The stark desert became a dry encampment, spreading out
in all directions from Hammertown!

King of the Hammers
emerged at Johnson Valley, where a series of rock trails and tough obstacles have challenged hardcore four-wheelers
for decades.
The sport
of rock crawling with hybrid 4WD buggies gained popularity and spawned Ultra4 racing, a combination of high-speed
desert sprints coupled with grueling rock crawls. Johnson Valley's hills and dry, sandy lakebeds provide
an optimal racing venue.
4WD Mechanix
Magazine arrived on February 3rd. Like other journalists interested in covering the week's events, we
brought a toy hauler trailer as a base for our HD video coverage. The '05 Dodge Ram 3500 4WD delivered the
equipment—including our XR350R Honda* "thumper" dirt bike for accessing the remote
competitive events.
*Plan on purchasing a California OHV non-resident or resident sticker for any non-plated, off-highway
vehicle! These were available at Hammertown—we paid the $30.

Beginning on Sunday,
February 5th, racing took a variety of forms. Smittybilt's inaugural Every Man's Challenge provided
Ultra4 style competition for entry level four-wheelers. The action grew to UTV and moto races on Thursday,
which preceeded the big event—Friday's 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers Race!

This section, devoted
to a variety of activities, shares the crowd-pleasing vantages that emerged over the race week. The King of
the Hammers is a major draw for racers, spectators and fun-seekers—many spending the entire week with friends,
family and the racing community.
Those who missed the
2012 Griffin King of the Hammers can enjoy the many HD videos at the magazine—especially the racing personality
interviews, the inside view of race car details and the HD video racing
action!
